Deadly Lipsticks

Most women don’t think twice about the cosmetics they apply to their bodies, even though these concoctions may sometimes contain deadly chemicals that result in death when used over long periods of time.

Metals found in soils and ground water are often used in mineral dyes to give lipstick its pigment. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) has estimated that in 2013 lead exposure accounted for 853,000 deaths due to long-term effects on health.

As more consumers become aware of the chemistry behind their favourite cosmetics, perhaps a greater call to action will be required by the manufacturers to provide products with greater consideration to health and safety risks.

Websites like EWG’s skin deep help consumers with product evaluations to  assess their environmental, health and safety risks.

Sure, beauty may be painful but it does not have to be deadly.
