Mouthwash: A Quarantine DIY

Posted on

Many nations across the globe have been under quarantine or social distancing mandates, due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. The current health advisory is to leave the house for essential items only. This result in a limitation of approximately one restocking trip every 2 weeks. Surprisingly, many Americas opted to hoard paper towels and tissues, and forgot many other everyday cosmetic essentials we don’t think too often about such as restocking their mouthwashes.

As the lock-down continues, most folks have gotten into do-it-yourself (diy) projects such as; crafting, cooking and other work-from-home ideas.  This has become especially beneficial when you forget to grab an item during your food run. It also helps to keep your pantry stocked with various multipurpose items that can be used to create easy diy alternatives. One such thing is the mouthwash. Although a lot of people don’t consider mouthwash as a cosmetic product, it is indeed classified as such -in most cases. Cosmetic mouthwash is different than a therapeutic mouthwash. Cosmetic mouthwashes are typically used to address short term issues with bad breath, whereas therapeutic mouthwashes are intended to address deeper rooted dental concerns that can can result in bad breath. Most of us use cosmetic mouthwashes that can be easily made at home; if the occasion called for it.

A quick and easy recipe made of items you most probably have in your kitchen pantry already includes baking soda, aloe vera Juice, filtered or distilled water (short term storage), and essential oils. Distilled water is best used as soon as it’s exposed to ambient air -this ensures maximum potency. Essential oils that may help fight bad breath include peppermint, tea tree, sage, myrrh, clove, and eucalyptus. The best part is you’ll know every ingredient that went into creating the product; a mouthwash that’s effective, pleasant to taste, eco-friendly, and is free from undesirable synthetic chemicals and preservatives.
